Cooperative Education Program in Civil Engineering
The problems facing our society demand engineering graduates who have an educational background based on sound scientific and economic principles, as well as having an appreciation of, and acquaintance with, engineering practice in their field. This interlocking of theory and practice is provided in Merrimack College’s cooperative education program in civil engineering by the blending of academic studies and practical professional experience. The co-op calendar for the student majoring in civil engineering is designed as a five-year program. Students often pause their coursework for one year in the spring of their junior year to work in industry. Co-op students receive a salary directly from the employers at the prevailing rate in the industry and do not pay tuition if they are not taking classes. A co-op is an excellent opportunity for students to balance coursework with practical experience.
