Learn more about the Department
Meet the faculty
The Department of English has built programs on the belief that creative thinking is the common bloodline of writing and reading. Learning how to write fiction, poetry, and nonfiction requires the analysis of writers’ stylistic, structural, thematic, and linguistic choices. Learning how to read literature involves identifying the challenges literary works pose and articulating their relevance to problems we face every day. Learning how to think creatively drives innovation across the academic disciplines. Courses offered by the department are designed to produce inclusive, dynamic think-tank conversations that inspire students to carry clarity, insight, and novelty into their personal and professional lives.

Department-specific academic policies:
Note that English department policy does not allow for English majors to take English courses on a pass/fail basis. Given that it is not their primary area of study, English minors are allowed to take one English course pass/fail, which cannot count toward the minor. Please see the English department page on the Merrimack College website for a complete listing of departmental policies.
