CEN 2001 - Site Engineering

Credits: 4
This course is organized into three modules: Lecture, Surveying Lab, and AutoCAD Lab. The lecture module is an introduction, from a Civil Engineering perspective, to the infrastructure systems that support urban socioeconomic activities, and fundamental system design and analysis methods. The lecture objectives are to: Explain the role that infrastructure systems and civil engineers play in society; Characterize the infrastructure systems covered in the course and describe their key design & management parameters and performance measures; Understand and apply economic, environmental and social considerations in the context of civil infrastructure projects; and Apply basic design & planning methods to infrastructure components & systems. The surveying lab and AutoCAD lab provide students the necessary background to select and develop sites for civil engineering structures. Proper site selection and engineering have a significant impact on the economics of a project and long-term utility and sustainability of the constructed facility. These labs will prepare students to: Select and develop sites for a variety of civil engineering projects; Determine site layout and access; Establish site contour and drainage; Installation of utilities; Perform elementary surveying; Create drawings using a computer-aided drafting package. This course also covers the utilization of engineering and architectural principles from concept through the construction techniques of traditional and sustainable site development.
Prerequisite(s): Civil Engineering majors or consent of the instructor.
When Offered: Every fall semester
