VPA 2900 - Practice and Identity

Credits: 4
This interdisciplinary studio/seminar hybrid course focuses on recognizing and articulating a student’s own unique artistic identity and the individualized processes associated with their practice. The course challenges students to consider what their own, unique, career in the arts might look like; develop a creative strategy; and begin to establish a professional practice within the arts. The studio-based assignments are designed to be tackled through any medium, as well as aid the students in grappling with their own creative processes and artistic identity. Special focus is paid to professional practice including portfolio organization; self-assessment; placing their practice within the history of their field; navigating social media; writing a personal artist statement; exploring grant writing; and engaging with professional industries. The semester ends with a midcareer portfolio. Course is for students with majors or minors in the Visual and Performing Arts department.
