NUR 3550 - Obstetrical and Newborn Nursing

Credits: 4
This course focuses on the role of the nurse in promoting women’s health throughout the lifespan but primarily during the childbearing years. Students will use the nursing process to maintain optimum health in the childbearing family. Course content includes pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, lactation, healthy newborn care, perinatal complications, and common health problems encountered by women during the reproductive years. Content will incorporate reporductive health in relation to cultural, global, ethical, and legal issues. Experiential learning will include acute care and community settings allowing students to care for women across the lifespan and within the context of the family. Simulation/lab experiences will build on those skills mastered during the previous semesters and include various labor and delivery situations. Prerequisites: NUR3000 and NUR3050. Corequisite: NUR3500.
