Program Educational Objectives

Program objectives are the abilities, skills, and accomplishments expected of electrical engineering graduates within the first three to five years following graduation. We expect that our graduates will:

1. As practicing electrical engineers, accomplish all or most of the following:

  • Successfully use their technical knowledge to engage in product design, development and/or testing
  • Have a satisfying career
  • Have one or more promotions

2. Stay technically current via professional, development and/or graduate studies.

3. Dedicate their professional knowledge and skills to meet the needs of their community and in general.

 

Student Outcomes

Consistent with the program’s objectives, students will have:

1. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics

2. An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors

3. An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences

4. An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts

5. An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives

6. An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions

Major Requirements


Experiential Learning Component


The Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering requires that in order to graduate, all students must fulfill an experiential learning component. This requirement provides students with the opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience outside of traditional coursework to enhance their learning and development, and is typically satisfied through the completion of a co-op or internship.

Program-specific academic policies:

  • To satisfy the prerequisite requirements for any mathematics, science, or engineering courses, students must achieve a grade of “C-” or higher in the prerequisite course. (Effective Spring 2023)

  • Students are allowed to repeat any program course below a “C-“, as long as the course is retaken in the program.

  • Students must register for and take the Fundamentals of Engineering examination, administered by the National Council of Engineering Examiners, to graduate.
