Music and Business Marketing and Management is a major designed to give students the opportunity to pursue a passion, while also developing a set of practical skills that will allow them to pursue a career on the business side of the music industry.

As a Music and Business Marketing and Management major, you will take courses in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, as well as the Girard School of Business. The required internship will serve to bridge the two disciplines, giving students the opportunity to apply their business knowledge in a music industry environment. This major provides skills designed to help you navigate the professional world and maximize your potential for success.

 

As a music and business marketing and management major, you will:

  • Analyze and interpret music from around the world in a variety of genres, styles and traditions

  • Develop your theoretical understanding of music composition

  • Create your own original compositions

  • Sharpen your critical writing skills about musical history, genres, styles and audiences

  • Understand and perform various types of industry-related research

  • Develop the capacity to collaborate successfully, both online and in-person

  • Motivate yourself and manage creative projects

  • Develop ideas that stand the test of critical analysis

  • Deliver effective oral presentations to students, professors and outside clients

  • Develop a wide range of skills in time management, strategic thinking, money management, financing, budgeting, leadership, networking and more

Transfer Students to the Major

For students transferring into the program, the transfer of music courses and level of placement in the Music major will be determined by the Music Faculty.

Major Requirements

Music and Business Marketing and Management major is the study of professional music and business theories and practices within both the music and business industries. You also will study how music is developed to better understand the industry itself.

The B.A. in Music and Business Marketing and Management is open to all Merrimack students and there are no prerequisites to apply. Auditions are not required and you do not have to be able to read music to declare the major.

The curriculum for the Bachelor of Arts in Music and Business Marketing and Management consists of 14 courses, as specified below. These include ten core classes, which includes a required experiential learning course, and then two elective courses in both music and business.
