The Cyber Security program is an interdisciplinary minor involving courses from two different departments - computer science and political science and public policy. In this program, students develop an understanding of computer programming, system security, national security and public policy. Students will choose a track, either Computer Science or Policy track, based on their career goals and personal interests.

Minor Requirements

The minor in Cyber Security requires completing a minimum of five courses. Students must take the required course POL 3541 Cyber Security: The Intersection of Technology and Policy and either CSC 1610 Problem Solving with Java or CSC 1611 Problem Solving with Python . Students then choose either the Policy or the Computer Science track. Students will also choose one or two electives, depending on their track.

CSC 1610 - Problem Solving with Java Credits: 4

Policy Track

CSC 3935 - Networking Credits: 4

Computer Science Track

Complete the following two required courses:

CSC 2820 - Data Structures Credits: 4
CSC 3055 - Network Security Credits: 4

Electives

Choose two electives (if completing the Policy track) or one elective (if completing the Computer Science track) from the following:

POL 1400 - Politics of Public Policy Credits: 4
POL 2010 - Political Ethics Credits: 4
PHL 2090 - Values in a Technological Culture Credits: 4

Cyber Security Minor Notes

Only two courses may be double-counted between a Cyber Security minor and any other major/minor, including Political Science, Public Policy, or Computer Science.

CSC 1610 Problem Solving with Java and CSC 1611 Problem Solving with Python courses have a prerequisite of MTH 1000 Concepts in Algebra or placing out of MTH 1000 Concepts in Algebra . In addition, students must pass this course with a B- or better in order to move on to advanced Computer Science courses.
