Learn more about the program

STEM teachers change the world by inspiring their students to CHANGE the world. Majoring in “STEM education” prepares you to deliver hands-on, engaging, and exciting lessons across the interdisciplinary areas of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Rich and varied experiences, STEM Education Majors understand but also experience changing the world. STEM education happens in formal settings, such as classrooms, and in authentic real-world settings, such as museums, state and national parks, sustainable farms, and environmental centers.  At Merrimack College STEM Education Majors not only experience similar opportunities, they also develop and lead lessons in after-school programs, urban and suburban classrooms.  Additionally, STEM Education Majors make events such as our annual Moon Over Merrimack and Julia Robinson Math Festival festivals come alive for the community. Through Merrimack College’s unique combination of coursework and authentic real-world opportunities, pre-service teachers’ learning is scaffolded and multi-disciplinary, supporting robust development of skills in research in state-of-the-art facilities in lesson development, engaging students of a variety of ages, and working with other STEM focused educators.

Studying STEM education, future teachers will have inclusive, interdisciplinary and collaborative experiences with a variety of students in field experiences grounded in equitable scientific sense-making.. They will develop strategies to address critical issues, such as climate change, environmental justice, and the ways that humans interact with the beauty and logic of the natural world. The program provides key courses within the School of Education, the School of Arts and Science, as well as the School of Engineering and Computational Science. The STEM Capstone pulls all the content together giving future teachers opportunities to explore a variety of educational settings, to create field based lessons, and to design their own semester-long investigation.
