Minors are an important part of any college experience and can complement and enhance your major in unique ways. The Department of Visual and Performing Arts minors are designed for you to gain valuable skills, understand history and critically engage with the content of the coursework. By choosing a minor, you can increase your competitive edge upon graduation.

The Music Minor requires the completion of minimum of 20 credits and minimum of 5 courses, as specified below.

MUS 1310 - The Nature of Music: The Art of Listening Credits: 4
MUS 2301 - Music History I: Antiquity to the Baroque Credits: 4
MUS 2302 - Music History II: Classical to the 21st Century Credits: 4
MUS 2360 - Elementary Music Theory: Understanding Musical Notation Credits: 4
OR
MUS 2380 - The Architecture of Music: From Phrase to Opera Credits: 4 cr.
Plus One Elective Music Course Credits: 4

Note

Demonstration of competence to the senior music faculty member in performance and/or composition. Assistance in obtaining private instruction on the student’s chosen instrument will be given. The student will be expected to give a public performance and/or presentation, preferably in the last year of the degree.
Participation for at least 2 semesters in at least one on-campus musical ensemble. (Currently the music ensembles include Marching Band, Pep Band, Jazz Band, Concert Choir, Concert Band, and Merrimack Schola).
Alternatives such as participating in the musical pit orchestra may be approved by the senior music faculty member.
