Program Educational Objectives

Exceptional civil engineers are highly competent problem solvers who thirst for knowledge and communicate effectively.  They aspire to innovate and improve infrastructure, products, and services to make the world more sustainable, safe, and resilient. We expect that alumni of our program:

  • Successfully address and resolve challenges in a professional position and/or through pursuit of a graduate or professional degree;
  • Continue to learn, develop professionally, and eventually pursue a leadership role in their chosen field; and
  • Dedicate their professional knowledge to meet the needs of their local and global communities in an ethical and innovative manner.

Student Outcomes

Consistent with the program’s objectives, students will have:

  1. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
  2. An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
  3. An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
  4. An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
  5. An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
  6. An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
  7. An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.

Major Requirements

This bachelor’s degree program requires a minimum of 133 credits. As part of the overall 133 credit minimum, students who seek a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree must satisfy the following requirements or their equivalents:

Three Courses in the Basic Sciences

Science/Math Elective

A minimum of 4 credits of science or mathematics from the list below or as approved by the Department of Civil Engineering.

One Course in Engineering Communications

One Course in Computer Programming

Three Courses in Engineering Science

Design Electives

A minimum of 12 credit hours of design electives.  Select a 4 credit hour course from three separate disciplines as shown below.

Technical Elective

A minimum of four credit hours in a technical area that supports and/or expands the student’s interest in engineering. The choice of course must be approved by the student’s advisor:

Open CE Elective

Four credits of a CEN or GEN course at the 4000 level or above.

Fundamentals of Engineering Exam

Students must register for and take the Fundamentals of Engineering examination, administered by the National Council of Engineering Examiners, in order to graduate.
