Sociology is the systematic study of human society and the patterns and consequences of social interaction. The study of sociology cultivates a critical perspective that relies on observations and empirical evidence to demonstrate the effect that society has on the ways we think, feel, and act.

The sociology program provides students with an understanding of social life that recognizes the complex and dynamic relationship between individuals and society. Our courses focus on the ways in which people’s lives are shaped by broader social, cultural, political, economic, and historical forces. They also emphasize the nature and effects of social inequality. The primary goal of the program is to develop each student’s sociological imagination as a type of critical thinking and informed analysis.

Through the required coursework and internship opportunities, the sociology program also provides students with the knowledge and skills to pursue an advanced degree or to work in a variety of fields, including law, social work, public health, education, and criminal justice.
