Major Requirements


  • Students are required to complete a total of 124 credits for the Bachelor of Arts degree, which includes the requirements for the WGS major and minor. The Women’s and Gender Studies major consists of 34 credits and a minimum of nine (9) courses – five (5) of which must be at the 3000 level or above.
  • Area Requirements: Of their nine total required courses, students seeking a WGS major must take three courses, one (1) from each of the following categories: Area A – Global Contexts; Area B – Race/Ethnicity and Intersectionality, and Area C – Critical Sexuality and Gender Studies.
  • All WGS majors are required to take the introductory course, WGS 1010 Gender and Society, WGS 3100 Feminist Theories in Action, a senior capstone/seminar, three courses that meet Area Requirements as outlined below, and three electives. A maximum of three (3) cross-listed courses may be used to fulfill major requirements.
  • Major GPA:  Students much achieve a final grade point average of a 2.0 or better in the major.

Courses Required of All WGS Majors


A. Global Contexts


Courses in this area examine gender-related issues in contexts that extend beyond the U.S., focusing on social, political, and economic issues and artistic productions rooted globally or internationally. This category emphasizes that women’s and gender issues extend across the world in cultures, societies, and cultural productions that are very different from those found in the U.S.

C. Critical Sexuality and Gender Studies


Courses in this category emphasize insights and analysis from critical fields such as Gender Studies and Sexuality Studies and incorporate an intersectional approach that teaches students to comprehend the complexity of gender identities and sexualities on local, national, and global levels.
