The study of history provides students with the opportunity to gain critical and reflective thinking abilities, communication skills, and an understanding of the rich diversity of human cultures that will be valuable in their personal and professional development. History majors at Merrimack are offered a wide range of courses in American, European, and World history, and also have an opportunity to conduct active research. Such hands-on learning is the best means of gaining an understanding of history while also developing students’ writing skills.
As part of a capstone sequence, history majors undergo a rigorous training in the historian’s approaches to research methods, writing, and ethical responsibilities, and produce a senior thesis paper representing significant historical research. Additionally, history majors are encouraged to pursue study overseas and to avail themselves of active learning through the department’s internships.
