CRM 2700 - Ethics of Criminal (In)Justice

Credits: 4
This course employs a critical perspective in which the criminal justice system is scrutinized through a moral and ethical lens. This course focuses on the ethical dilemmas faced by police, courts, and correctional authorities in dealing with an increasingly diverse and multicultural society. We begin with a discussion of moral issues by exploring ethical dilemmas faced by professionals in the criminal justice system first, then move on to an examination of the major theoretical foundations of ethics within the context of criminal justice. This helps students understand real life ethical issues before grappling with the philosophical approaches to the resolution of those issues. We also examine the increasing diversity of society and how these changes are affecting the criminal justice system. We investigate the key issues surrounding race, gender, social class, and crime, and the roles these issues play in sentencing and punishment in contemporary United States.
Prerequisite(s): CRM 1000 or consent of the instructor.
