CHM 5120 - Chemical Education II

Credits: 2
This chemical education course is for graduate students majoring in chemistry or a closely related field, with a particular emphasis on preparing students to teach applied laboratory skills to students enrolled in Merrimack’s introductory chemistry sequence under the supervision of a full-time faculty member. It will focus on educational principles and current approaches to teaching college-level chemistry, with a particular emphasis on challenges and opportunities inherent to helping students develop abstract and quantitative reasoning skills. Students in this course will learn about high impact teaching practices such as universal design of course materials, the use of active learning and inquiry-based classroom exercises, and inclusive teaching practices. This course will also provide opportunities for students to develop their presentation, demonstration, and communication skills. Hands-on components will include performing lab experiments, demonstrating applied laboratory skills, clearly explaining the chemical principles of each experiment, and assessing student progress towards learning objectives. This course meets twice per week for 1 hour per session.
