CRM 6100 - Ethics in Law EnforcementCredits: 4 Incidents of police misconduct have increased public concern over police ethical behavior, standards of professionalism, and police agency transparency and accountability. The understanding of ethics and professionalism in policing are an integral part of educating students interested in pursuing careers in law enforcement. This course will examine and apply ethical theories to topics such as discretionary decision-making, use of force, misconduct, integrity and responsibility, incidents of civil unrest, undercover operations, and privacy concerns. Through the use of hypothetical policing scenarios, students will learn to identify ethical dilemmas when they arise, critically analyze the situation, and apply sound ethical decision-making strategies. This course will also address the fundamental role of ethical leadership and how leadership decisions within police departments have widespread agency, community, and societal impact.
