Humans have been called the “storytelling animal” (Gottschall) and the “symbol-using (symbol- making, symbol-misusing) animal” (Burke). Stories are used to inform, to persuade, to connect, to humanize, to entertain. However, they don’t always hit their mark. Throughout this course, students will gain a foundational understanding of why and how of effective storytelling. Although the course won’t necessarily teach how to use storytelling platforms or technologies (e.g., TikTok, Adobe Premiere), it will teach how to learn those tools. The tools will always change but the strategies for learning those tools will remain valuable.
