SPM 4001 - Sport Management Co-OpCredits: 8 The Sport Management Co-op course requires a three-way joint venture between three parties: the college, the student, and an employer. The student is the connective tissue in this venture, as he/she benefits from opportunities offered by both the Girard School of Business and the employer. The College offers credits and official support; the employer gives the student an opportunity to develop skills in a real world sport business environment. Ultimately, the onus rests on the student to balance academics and real world responsibilities through strong performance on the job, while simultaneously meeting expectations in the academic portion of the experience. In this course, the most successful students are those who bring a mature and responsible attitude and remain flexible and realistic, seeking ways to balance the sometimes conflicting needs of school and co-op schedules. The co-op site currently in place for sport management students at Merrimack College is the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (MiLB AA baseball club). It is possible that more partnerships with other sites will be established in the future. If selected for the opportunity, students will receive intensive sales training from Fisher Cats staff and gain hands-on experience selling team inventory (e.g., ticket plans, group outings, etc.). Students will first fill out a co- op application. The application is found on and submitted through Handshake to the Lucey Center for Business Advising along with a resume. If selected, the student then goes through screening on behalf of the Fisher Cats organization. If approved, the student is registered for the course. Not available for students who have completed SPM4000. Prerequisite(s): Must submit an application to be reviewed for approval prior to registration. Must be a Sport Management Concentration or Sport Management minor. Fulfills: X in LS Core
