GCS 1800 - Superheroes

This course will explore the origins of superheroes in comic books and examine how the superhero has escaped the confines of a trivialized medium to replace traditional heroes in American culture. How do the superheroes that have emerged from the comic book tradition reflect older mythologies but also respond to the needs and interests of modern American society? To approach this question we will consider not only printed comics but also new expression of characters in other areas, such as television, film, and digital media.
