HDE 2600 - Mental Health Across the Lifespan

Credits: 4

In this course, we will review the variety of theories of human development as we build an understanding of how genetics, family history, social environment, and one’s personal developmental experiences can affect the healthy psychological growth of a person. Once students explore the current theories of healthy human development, students will identify and explore the factors that can contribute to compromises in an individual’s mental health.

Using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5-TR), the course textbook, and supplemental resources, students will become familiar with the continuum of mental health disorders from childhood through old age. Students will gain an understanding of the types, purpose, application, and intention of mental health diagnosis. Students will evaluate the benefits of a mental health diagnosis as well as the inherent dangers that being labeled with a mental illness can have on a person. Students will have an opportunity to develop an understanding of how psychopathology (mental illness) develops and then practice using mental health assessment tools to explore the spectrum of mental health treatment.
