NEU 4000 - PsychopharmacologyCredits: 4 This course is an introduction to the field of Neuropsychopharmacology and focuses on the properties and mechanisms of action of psychoactive drugs. We will begin by reviewing fundamental biochemistry concepts, basic neuroanatomy and the process of synaptic transmission. Next, we will build on this knowledge towards an understanding of specific neurotransmitter systems, including acetylcholine, the monoamines, and amino acid neurotransmitters, among others. Finally, we will examine mechanisms of action of the various drugs of abuse and neuropsychiatric treatments that target these neurotransmitter systems. Prerequisite(s): BIO 3037 or PSY 3150
