BIO 5045 - MicrobiologyCredits: 4 This course is an exploration of the microbial world intended for Biology and related majors, with an emphasis on prokaryotic microbes. An understanding of microbial structure, physiology, biochemical diversity, and evolution will be developed and will form the framework for considering the role that microbes play in both health and disease, as well as the health of our planet. The laboratory portion of the course will focus on the development of aseptic technique, isolation and cultivation of microorganisms, and microscopy. In the lab, students will learn to use a combination of classical and modern molecular approaches to identify and characterize bacteria isolated from environmental sources. Prerequisite(s): Permission of the instructor.
