BIO 5050 - Human Physiology & Anatomy I: Neurobiology and Endocrinology

Human Physiology & Anatomy I addresses the evolution and mechanisms of human body form & function from genes to organ systems to the whole organism interacting with our environment. Course goals include fostering greater appreciation for the universal functions and principles shared by all animals and the importance of such knowledge to the advancement of medical science. Focus in lecture is placed largely on animal nervous and endocrine systems as mechanisms of regulating physiologic function relative to environmental needs. Muscle physiology is also addressed in detail. Laboratory involves some in-class discussions and student presentations of selected literature, but focuses primarily on a research project synthesizing key course concepts, based on the research experience of the instructor (for example, a project investigating the neuroendocrine basis of behavior). Lab also includes exercises in human tissue identification, neuro- and sensory anatomy & physiology involving prepared slides, dissections, models, readings, & critical reviews (writing/discussion) of scientific literature relevant to the discipline. 3 hours of lecture and 1 lab period per week.
Prerequisite(s): BIO1027 and BIO1028 and permission of the instructor.
