PHL 2620 - Philosophy of Sport

​​In ancient Greece-the birthplace of the Olympics-the word aretê meant both excellence and virtue. In this course students will use a variety of contemporary readings and classic sources to explore the profound links between athletic excellence and moral virtue. They will reflect on the ethical dimensions of sports and athletics both in society at large and in their own lives, including questions of the nature of competition, the role of violence, the presence of racism, and the need for fairness, equality, and diversity. Area Requirement for Philosophy: Ethics
