THR 3530 - Stage and Production Management

This course will introduce the fundamental roles and responsibilities of the stage manager and production manager (SM & PM). Students will gain knowledge of the theory and practice of SM & PM work through hands-on experience, in-class activities, individual and group project-based work, and discussions with professional theatrical managers. Topics include organization, interpersonal relations, leadership skills, documentation, and the production process.

The purpose of this class is to introduce and discuss effective ways to work as a stage manager and production manager in a performing arts setting. We will have the opportunity to hear from professionals and tour other venues as well as have hands-on experience with fundamental activities including budgets, rehearsal preparation, technical demands, and calling a show. Finally, the class will introduce you to opportunities available in arts management and help with the creation of a professional resume.
