DES 2820 - Elements of Graphic Design

Credits: 4

This introductory graphic design studio course provides students with a broad intersectional exploration of technology, coding, media and graphic design. It introduces students to how graphic design dynamically creates and disseminates communication. Students explore the formal elements of graphic design, including but not limited to typography, layout, file formats, creative coding, and media. Students develop a technical understanding of “computer as a tool,” how the internet works, and digital literacy. Students explore the design process through both developing their technical skills, as well as exploring theoretical perspectives; such as how hierarchy, legibility, media, composition, and craft yields message creation and system design. Students complete multiple communicative, expressive and digital projects utilizing concept generation, refinement and production. Classes include short lectures, discussions, software demonstrations, and studio work.
