SOC 3650 - Immigration (Study Abroad)

Credits: 4
The immigration process  - from the decision to leave one’s home country, to the crossing of international borders, to establishing oneself in a new society, to the reception of the host population, to the acquisition of citizenship, to the politics of immigration, to the possibility of “assimilation” - is fascinating and highly relevant to our world today. SOC 3650 will analyze all aspects of immigration through a sociological lens. Upon completing this course, you will gain a greater understanding and appreciation for immigration as well as the science of sociology more generally. This course will consider immigrants originating from all over the world, but focus in-depth on a particular destination country as a case study.  At the end of the semester, the class will travel to the case study country and observe immigration first-hand. Note that this is a global course with a short-term study abroad component that requires additional fees, an application through the Global Education Office (GEO), and the professor’s approval before enrolling.
Fulfills: D, X and SOSC in LS Core.
