RTS 3200 - God in the Hebrew Bible

Credits: 4

The course examines representations of the divine in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) as developed in current scholarly debates. The investigation focuses on selected biblical passages within their literary, historical, and cultural contexts. The course also introduces students to the hermeneutical complexities of reading texts that are regarded “sacred” in Judaism and Christianity but often stand in sharp contrast to doctrinal teachings about the divine. Discussions about the appropriations of these texts in contemporary religious, political, and academic discourses feature prominently.
