COM 4350 - Misinformation in the Digital Age

Credits: 4
This course explores the circulation of fake news, hyperpartisan or propagandistic news, clickbait, memes, and other kinds of online misinformation across various websites and social media platforms. We will consider misinformation as it relates to the news industry and contemporary practices in journalism, public cynicism, and growing distrust in media organizations. We will also consider information and technology industry practices as well as policy debates and issues impact ing the
spread of information around the world. Finally, we will examine communication theories to better understand both who is likely to share and/or believe online misinformation and what we can do about it. This course draws on scholarship in media and communication studies, political science, psychology, library and information sciences, and other fields of inquiry .
Prerequisite(s): COM 1020  and COM 2401  or COM 2801
