CRM 6002 - Criminal Law and ProcedureCredits: 4 This course, first, covers the fundamental principles of substantive criminal law. II examine the basic elements of crimes, including actus reus and mens rea; criminal liability, such as complicity, attempt, and conspiracy, as well as defenses to crimes. This course will then cover the fundamentals principles and rules of criminal procedure, including double jeopardy, immunity, statutes of limitations, the issuance and execution of an arrest warrant, and interrogation and confessions. The Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Amendment constitutional restraints on the activities of law enforcement during the investigatory stage of the criminal process will be examined. Special attention will be paid to the U.S. Supreme Court’s interpretation of these amendments and how these interpretations have evolved over time.
