CMH 5090G - Behavioral Health Care

Credits: 4
The objective of this course is to introduce students to the practice of integrated behavioral health care in a primary care setting.  Students will gain an in-depth understanding of the roles of behavioral health providers working in primary care settings, theories and models of care, and cross-cultural issues.  After reviewing the foundational counseling skills needed to engage patients in primary care, students will develop skills in assessment, intervention planning, treatment implementation, and program evaluation.  Students will learn to identify the clinical signs of mental health disorders and high risk psychiatric presentations, personal/social conflicts, eating disorders, and substance use disorders.  Students will also develop competence in supporting primary care patients who present with a wide range of physical and behavioral health concerns, including considerations for diverse patients and those who face barriers to receiving care. Pre-requisites: CMH5000G, CMH5100G, CMH5020G.
