Major in Theatre Arts

The major in theatre arts combines a liberal arts perspective with in-depth study of theatre in its historical and cultural contexts. At the core of the program is the belief that the best theatre artist is one who possesses both a broad knowledge of the theory and literature of the field and highly developed artistic skills. The major recognizes the importance of all aspects of theatre and offers courses and/or practical training in performance, technical theatre, design, directing, arts management playwriting, and dramaturgy. 

The Theatre Arts major requires the completion of a minimum of 46 credits and a minimum of 12 courses as specified below.

FAA 2505        Politics of Performance:  Theatre, Government, and Social Change

FAA 2520      Theatre History I

FAA 2530   Theatre History II

FAA 2550W   American Musical Theatre

FAA 2570        Technical Production for the Theatre

FAA 2580        Design for the Theatre

FAA 2586        Script Analysis

FAA 3550        Theatre Arts Capstone Seminar

 

Two electives from the following courses:

              FAA 2540        Introduction to Playwriting

              FAA 2560        London Theatre

              FAA 2585        Improvisation

              FAA 2590        Arts Management

 FAA 3520        Acting III: Special Topics in Acting

 One elective may be fulfilled by the following English courses:

 ENG 3220        Renaissance Drama

 ENG 3250         Shakespearean Drama

 ENG 3680      World Drama

 ENG 3820        20th Century Drama and Performance by Women

 

Major GPA. Students must achieve a final graduation point average of 2.00 or better within any majors offered by the Visual and Performing Arts Department. The GPA for majors will be calculated as the average of all courses taken within the major.

Major Requirements


The Theatre Arts major requires the completion of a minimum of 46 credits and a minimum of 12 courses as specified below. In addition, each Theatre Arts major is required to serve on the Board of Directors of the Merrimack College Theatre program for a minimum of two semesters and a maximum of five semesters.
