Catholic Studies

The minor in Catholic Studies is an important dimension of Merrimack College’s educational mission as a contemporary Catholic College. This minor presents students the opportunity to explore the richness of the Catholic intellectual, cultural, social and ethical traditions from different academic perspectives. The minor invites students into an appreciative and critical study of the influence of Catholic belief and practice on the development of religion and culture. As part of Merrimack’s Augustinian heritage, the life and thought of Saint Augustine of Hippo is an important dimension of the minor.

Minor Requirements


The minor in Catholic Studies is an important dimension of Merrimack College’s educational mission as a contemporary Catholic College. This minor presents students the opportunity to explore the richness of the Catholic intellectual, cultural, social and ethical traditions from different academic perspectives. The minor invites students into an appreciative and critical study of the influence of Catholic belief and practice on the development of religion and culture. As part of Merrimack’s Augustinian heritage, the life and thought of Saint Augustine of Hippo is an important dimension of the minor.

Five courses (20 credits) are required for the Minor in Catholic Studies.

       

      One RTS course at the 1000-level (such as RTS1100, RTS1010, etc.)

     

      One of the following courses on the thought of Saint Augustine of Hippo:

             RTS 2400     Sex, Politics, Religion, and St. Augustine or

             PHL 2350     Philosophy of Augustine

 

      Three elective courses from the following list. One of the chosen electives must be from the RTS Department.

              PHL 2200  History of Ancient Philosophy

              PHL 2330  History of Medieval Philosophy

              PHL 2850  Philosophical Hermeneutics

              PHL 3040  Philosophy of Religion

              PHL 4030  Metaphysics

              POL 2581  Political Thought: Plato to Machiavelli

              POL 2582  Political Thought: Machiavelli to Marx
