COM 4550 - Food as Communication

This discussion-based course focuses on the roles culture, media, and society play in the dialogue and production of food.  Topics addressed in this course include:  Cultural representations through food (e.g., barbecue), mediated depictions of food (e.g., print, film, radio, television, podcasts), gender and politics surrounding food (e.g., celebrity chefs, advertising, social movement campaigns), and societal health implications of food promotion (e.g., health literacy).  The overall objective of this course is to generate a “community of inquiry” regarding food, culture, society, and media.
